Dr. Christopher Mallavarapu
MAINE, September 29, 2026 /PRSearchEngine/ – Dr. Christopher Mallavarapu, MD, FACC, SCAI, board-certified interventional cardiologist and 2023 recipient of the Golden Stethoscope Award from Upper Allegheny Health System, continues to be recognized as a physician whose career has been defined by clinical excellence and an unwavering commitment to patient welfare. Now practicing at Olean General Hospital and Northern Maine Medical Center, Dr. Mallavarapu brings more than 35 years of cardiovascular medicine experience to patients across the region — and a professional record that includes one of the most notable examples of physician-led patient safety advocacy in recent cardiology history.
In the early 2000s, while practicing as a cardiologist in Louisiana, Dr. Mallavarapu raised serious concerns about a colleague who was performing medically unnecessary cardiovascular procedures on patients — including placing coronary stents in arteries with little to no blockage. When those concerns went unaddressed through internal channels, he pursued the matter formally, filing a federal qui tam whistleblower case under the False Claims Act on behalf of the United States government. The case drew national media attention and spanned nearly a decade of federal proceedings.
The outcome was significant. Dr. Mallavarapu’s colleague was ultimately convicted on 51 counts of Medicare billing misconduct following a two-month jury trial and sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. Related proceedings involving the hospitals where the unnecessary procedures were performed resulted in more than $6.3 million in recovered federal funds. Dr. Mallavarapu’s role as the original whistleblower was instrumental in bringing the case to light and holding multiple parties accountable.
Today, that same commitment to ethical, patient-first practice continues to shape how Dr. Mallavarapu approaches his work in Olean and Northern Maine. His credentials are independently verified across leading physician directories including Healthgrades and Doximity, and his 2023 Golden Stethoscope recognition reflects the standard of care he has maintained throughout his career. For patients in regional communities where access to experienced interventional cardiology is not always guaranteed, his presence represents both clinical capability and personal integrity.
